accessible. We host Black Powder Shoots; 3-D Bow Trail Shoots;
Modern Shoots including air rifle for the younger generation when
with an adult supervisor; pre-1840 Rendezvous twice a year. We also
sponsor 2 FREE Hunter Education Classes a year. Please come join us
for a fun time.
The
Southeastern Iowa Sportsman's Society, Inc. was formed by a group of
muzzleloader shooting friends. They also enjoyed shooting modern
guns. They set up targets on land own by a member of the group, Bud
Shipley of Douds, Iowa. They had a fun time shooting and inviting
others to attend their shoots. They gradually built the range up to
include 4 berms, covered shooting line with loading bench, a target
house, and later an electric trap house. Shipley passed on in the
1980's. His family and friends continued to improve the range by
adding graveled parking area, camping area, club house, semi-modern
restrooms and shower, lights for night trap shooting. Archery 3-D
shooting trail walks and modern shooting were both added to the many
events held at the range yearly. In 2004 the club moved to its
present location just east and south of its old location. It is now
located on Shipley's oldest son, Bill Shipley's farm, near
Birmingham, Iowa. Through the years Hunter Education has been a very
important part of the club. There are 16 club members who are
volunteer Iowa DNR Hunter Education Instructors. An achievement that
Bud Shipley would be very proud of! All classes are FREE to the
public. Classes are held in March and August (check the calendar of
events). The public is welcome to attend any and all of the club
events.
Club
Involvement With YHEC
In 1993
the first Iowa Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) was held at
the Iowa 4-H Camp Grounds at Madrid, Iowa. Three Hunter Ed.
Instructors from SISSI went as volunteers, 2 were the only crew for
the black powder shooting event (they loaded 500 rounds, all without
a miss fire). The 3rd instructor took a 5 member Junior Team to the
event. There were (and still is) 8 events involved in the YHEC
Program that runs for 2 days. 1) Muzzleloader; 2)shotgun; 3).22
rifle; 4) archery; 5) orienteering; 6) wildlife identification; 7)
safety trail; and on Sunday the written exam. The clubs' 1st Jr.
Team took 1st place in the state and advanced on to the Nationals.
Where team members did very well in placing. (From 1993 until 2001
at least one Jr/Sr Team participated yearly. During those years the
teams had many members who placed individually as well as a team. As
for the volunteers who help at the different events, there are now
12 at the black powder sight, including the original 2 from SISSI.
Others help at many of the other locations. Largest group of youth
to go through the YHEC Program has been 125 from around the state of
Iowa. Many of those very first youth are now volunteer DNR
Instructors and come back as coaches with their own teams yearly.
Club
Hosting
SISSI not
only host monthly events as listed on the calendar. They have hosted
Scout Campovers; weddings; 4-H Camp-overs; and the Iowa Black Powder
Federation State Championship Rifle and Pistol Shoot many times.
Opening
of The New Range
The new
range was built in a 6 week period of time thanks to many wonderful
volunteers from the club and others who take a great interest in the
club and what it offers the surrounding area. The first shoot to be
held at the new range was the August 2004 Iowa Black Powder
Federation State Championship Rifle Shoot and Pistol Shoot. There
couldn't of been a more fitting way to open the range.
